5th graders participated in collaborative group work to "Save Fred!".
Fred, the gummy worm, had been spending his time boating on the lake near his home. Fred is not too bright, he is a worm after all. He has never learned to swim and he never wears his life preserver. Fred’s boat capsized and he was stuck! His life preserver was caught under the boat, but he could not reach it without falling into the water and drowning. Groups worked together using only 4 paper clips. Students were not allowed to touch Fred, the boat, or the life preserver directly with their hands. They could only use the paper clips! This activity required analytical thinking, communication skills, and cooperation!

How did American Indian tribes survive their environment? Create a structure that demonstrates how these groups of people adapted their clothing, homes, and lives to the environment they lived in. Students in Ms. Beam's class used the STEM Engineering Process to research, plan/design, create and revise their structures to meet the criteria of the project.
